Evelyn 42 Pterodactyl Launches it’s new Website

Pterodactyl is a 1989 Evelyn 42, currently rated 27 by PHRF of the Chesapeake….although we hope that will change. But not bad for an old gal!! We bought her from Mark Symonds and Mike Leslie in Grosse Point, Michigan and brought her down to Hampton Roads VA in December 2008.
The new website is at:

SCR rigging on Evelyn 32

Sailing with a full set of SCR rigging, Ben Hall and Bill Berges sailed the Evelyn 32 Bluto to first place in PHRF 2, earning PHRF Boat of the Week honors for Key West Race Week 2010.

bluto_large“The best part was being competitive through a wider range of conditions,” says Ben of the upgrade to SCR rigging and a Hall seamless carbon mast. “We were competitive against the bigger boats in conditions where we weren’t competitive before.” The conditions he’s talking about are big waves and wind – exactly the conditions experienced on the fourth day of racing when team Bluto won both races.

“We could see that the mast stood up well while sailing upwind in waves. The carbon mast is much stiffer, and with the carbon rigging the mast just doesn’t move around,” says Ben.

“It also helps that the mast and rigging are much lighter. The mast doesn’t pump like it used to, even without the checkstays.” (Bluto was originally equipped with an aluminum mast with wire shrouds and checkstays. With the switch to carbon, the checkstays were eliminated.)

Bluto4“With a new No. 3 and the stiffer rig, we were fast upwind in lump,” says Ben. “We overcame a weakness the boat had with its previous set-up. On the last day, which was light air, we still had a confused sea state left over from the breezy day. We noticed that we were pitching less and we were pretty quick upwind. Bottom line is, with the new set-up, the boat is livelier and even more fun to sail.”

Evelyn 32-Turbo takes Key West Race Week PHRF 2

Bluto, an Evelyn 32 co-owned by Bill Berges and Ben Hall, was chosen PHRF Boat of the Week. Bluto won three of the last four races to edge the J/109 Rush (Bill Sweetser) by one point in a very competitive PHRF 2.

Racing is over for December and we have the January 1 race at HYC to look forward to but I am already feeling the withdrawals?? I’m sick….

Twenty Nine Boats have taken advantage of the signing up for Charleston Race week, April 08-11, 2010, so far. Pterobyte included. We get another shot at Bert Carp in Remedy. Let’s keep an eye out for others we may know. I did notice a lot of participation from VA and MD.

February 26-28, 2010 is Mardi Gras in New Orleans. There will be at least one more E32 there. It should be a great time to run away and sail in the some temperate weather. With enough volunteers and logistic support I am sure we can make it.

Please be sure to shout out if you are interested in any of the above.

HYC Frostbite Race #3

We are 1 for 3.   We finished in one Frostbite race, the next one was called on lack of wind.  We didn’t make today’s race because the club had lost partial power.  Of course the partial part they lost operated the lift and the kitchen.  All dressed up and no hoist and no breakfast.

Got any cheese to go with that?

We’ll try again next week.

Southern Bay Racing News You Can Use # 469
SBRNYCU is an independent weekly publication of southern Chesapeake Bay racing happenings. Founded in April, 2000.
Try as they might, the skipper,Jim Baldwin, and crew of Pterobyte, an Evelyn 32-2, could not get to the water for Frostbite Race #3.  The Pterobyte team ran into an immovable object, a large boat lift.  As of Sunday, power was still not fully restored in Hampton (due to the nor’easter) and no amount of badgering, cajoling, or threatening could get the lift to move.  So, Pterobyte and other dry-stored boats were left high and dry on Sunday.

HYC Frostbite Race #2

Dialing It In….

Forcast light winds came to be.  After a great start the race was finally abandoned for lack of wind.  But it was a great sunny pleasant day on the water.

Pterobyte, Evelyn 32-2, showed it has boat speed dialed in.  In heavy air last week we had the boat on it’s feet and driving hard and fast.  In light air this week we had the start fantastic acceleration and the first mark rounding.

Now we need to focus on tactics, local conditions and navigation.  Putting all this together with this great crew has been a wonderful experience.    One step at at time.
